Inline Editing
Inline editing lets you update applicant information directly from the table view without navigating to the detail page. This speeds up data entry and corrections for common fields.
How It Works
In the Applicants table view (and other roster tables), certain columns support inline editing:
- Hover over a table cell to see if it is editable (the cursor changes or an edit indicator appears).
- Click the cell to activate edit mode.
- Modify the value using the appropriate input (text field, dropdown, date picker).
- Press Enter or click away to save the change.
- Press Escape to cancel the edit and revert to the original value.
Editable Fields
The following fields typically support inline editing:
| Field | Edit Control | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Student name | Text input | Edit first and/or last name. |
| Guardian email | Text input | Email validation is applied. |
| Guardian phone | Text/phone input | International format supported. |
| Status | Dropdown | Select from configured statuses. |
| Engagement level | Dropdown | Choose hot, warm, cold, idle. |
| Program | Dropdown | Select from active programs. |
| Year group | Dropdown | Select from year groups for the chosen enrolment year. |
| Owner / Assigned to | Dropdown | Assign a team member. |
| Follow-up date | Date picker | Set or change the next follow-up date. |
| Tags | Tag selector | Add or remove tags. |
TIP
Inline editing is particularly useful for quickly updating multiple records. For example, after a series of phone calls, you can update engagement levels and follow-up dates directly in the table without opening each applicant's page.
Saving Behavior
- Changes are saved immediately when you click away from the cell or press Enter.
- A brief loading indicator may appear on the cell while the save is in progress.
- A success toast notification confirms the save.
- If the save fails (e.g., due to validation or a network error), an error toast appears and the cell reverts to its original value.
Permissions
Inline editing requires the leads.edit permission. If you only have view access, cells will not be clickable for editing.
Limitations
- Complex fields (rich text notes, file uploads, checklists) cannot be edited inline. These require opening the detail page.
- Batch inline edits are not supported -- each cell must be edited individually.
- Some computed fields (such as age, family name) are read-only and cannot be edited inline because they are derived from other data.
Bulk Actions as an Alternative
For updating the same field across many records, consider using bulk actions in the table view:
- Select multiple rows using the checkboxes.
- Choose a bulk action from the action bar that appears (e.g., change status, assign owner, add tag).
- Apply the change to all selected records at once.
This is more efficient than inline-editing the same field one record at a time.
WARNING
Inline edits are saved immediately and there is no undo. Double-check your changes, especially for fields like status that may trigger automated workflows or roster transitions.
